A long-standing tradition at KiKxxl is for the first-year trainees to carry out a social project. For the first time last year, each location was allowed to choose their own organisation. For instance, the local Tafel (food bank) is being supported in Osnabrück, the ‘Help&Hope’ foundation in Dortmund, and the ‘Deutsche Kinderschutzbund (German Child Protection League)’ in Bremen. One of the aims of the Osnabrück Tafel is to help people in need, often by donating food or goods. The ‘Help&Hope’ foundation helps disadvantaged children and young people through difficult situations. The young people are also given support in dealing with officialdom, sorting out their housing situation, and in their search for a specific training place. The Kinderschutzbund stands up for the rights of children and is committed to helping children and young people grow up without violence. The social project is not only about doing something good, but also about the sense of responsibility that comes with independently planning, implementing and managing the project.
